kids, inc. leadership: Jim Brock - June 3, 2021

Welcome back to Catching Up With Kids, Incorporated! Kids, Inc. has been a staple in the Amarillo community for over 75 years and over those years, we have built a vast collection of fun memories and we are excited to share more of those with you!

Over the last few weeks, we have been giving you a look into the past leadership of our organization and some fun facts from our early years. We have previously discussed the founding of Kids, Inc., and our earliest leaders. CLICK HERE to find those posts. In 1973, Earl Smith stepped down as director of Kids, Incorporated. Jim Brock took over the position and would serve the organization for the next 10 years.

Brock had a young cousin who participated in Kids, Inc. sports and he and his wife would attend all of their games. This was Brock’s first introduction into the world of Kids, Inc. While working as a physical education and health teacher in 1962, Brock met Dick Larson, one of Kids, Incorporated’s Round-Up coordinators. This led Brock to begin officiating and eventually coaching Kids, Inc. teams. He stepped into the role of Round-Up coordinator soon after. In less than one year since he began attending his cousin’s games, Brock went from no involvement with Kids, Inc. to being involved at all levels. He would eventually go on to become the city of Amarillo’s recreation superintendent in 1967, working closely with Earl Smith and the whole Kids, Inc. organization. All of this involvement and connections eventually led Brock to take on the role of director. During his time in this role, he helped Kids, Inc. introduce Soccer and T-Ball seasons to the community.
