Kids, Inc. in 1950 - October 14, 2021

Hello and welcome back to Catching Up With Kids, Incorporated! As you probably know by now, we are currently registering for Fall Recreational Indoor Soccer, Boys Basketball, and session two of Fall Volleyball. Each of these seasons are starting soon, so don’t wait to get your kiddo signed up!

This week we are wanting to take a deep dive into the history of Kids, Inc. In 2021, our organization is celebrating 76 years of serving the Amarillo community and surrounding areas. We want to give you an inside look into how we celebrated one of our earliest milestones, way back in 1950.

By the fifth anniversary of Kids, Incorporated, the organization offered three different sports year-round. The most recent addition was girls’ softball, which was added in 1946. In a June edition of the Amarillo Sunday News Globe, an article covering Kids, Inc. stated “Each summer an average number of 112 softball teams with 15 boys or girls on the roster engage in a 21-game, two-games-a-week schedule. In the fall, 24 football teams of 20 boys each participate in weekly contests for which the after-school periods during the week are used for practice. An in the winter months, an average of 60 basketball teams with 10 boys on the roster utilize gymnasiums of the Maverick Club, Youth Center, St. Mary’s Academy, and Price College in a two-games-a-week schedule.”

These numbers may seem small compared to the number of kiddos we serve today, but these were massive in 1950! We always love looking back on the early years of our organization and seeing how far we have come. No matter how much we grow, our main goal will never change. It’s the kid that counts!
