Happy Veterans Day! Back in 1945, one of the biggest driving forces behind starting our organization was the fact that many families had members serving overseas. While still recovering from the Great Depression, the United States entered World War II following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The able-bodied men of America either volunteered to serve or were called to defend the American way of life. Many of these young men had new families with young children at home. Those citizens still at home were forced to tighten their belts and go to work. Children in the Amarillo area now lacked proper supervision, with many of them loitering in alleyways, frequenting pool halls, and dropping out of school. The adults of the community were concerned about the youngest citizens of Amarillo and began to ask, “What if children had something positive to do, like recreation?” Leaders of the community listened and began to form a new type of organization. Kids, Inc. went on to become a source of entertainment and routine for the young kids of the Amarillo community.

Two men who were instrumental to the start of Kids, Incorporated were service men themselves. Cal Farley, originally from Minnesota, served in World War I and Bus Dugger served in World War II, sacrificing his final year at the University of Oklahoma to do so. We are grateful to those who served back during the early years of Kids, Incorporated, those who served before, and those who serve now.
