jaym'n kelly - special achievement award winner 2015

Jaym'n Kelly - Boys Ranch Cross Country

Why Honored: Boys ranch senior, Kelly, has been legally blind since birth. He currently sees 20/2000 out of his right eye and 20.70 out of his left. There is a chance by the time Kelly reaches 30 he could be blind. Although able to only see with a 20 degree peripheral vision and pretty much shadows in front of him, Kelly has inspired those around him by refusing to let his eye issues prevent him from participating in athletics.

Kelly was a three-year member of the Boys Ranch cross country team. He didn't run his junior year because eye operations prevented him from doing so. Kelly was the captain of the Boys Ranch team this year, placing in the top five of the District 3-2A meet. At regionals he surprised many, coming a second shy of breaking 18 minutes, finishing 26th overall. He has been accepted to attend Texas Tech.

Quotable: "He has incredible personality traits in that I've never seen the kid upset. I mean he is very, very positive. There is a chance by age 30 he will be blind and he will joke about it to us. He will never drive. Yet he's really positive. The team was really behind him. Jaym'n ran so good for us at regionals. He was our team leader and our team captain."
