A.C. "Bub" Smith

Bub Smith was a skilled hunter and fisherman; he was an expert snow and water skier and loved riding horses and soapbox racers. He began fishing at a young age in small streams in New Mexico; he later enjoyed fly-fishing in Colorado.

On his first trip to Florida, he caught a 100-pound tarpon on his second cast with a fly rod.

His hunting exploits began with duck hunting near Dimmitt and ranged from shooting pheasant and partridge in Scotland to big-game hunting in Africa. He hunted deer, elk, and wild hogs.

Because of his 50 years of involvement in conservation and environmental projects, Smith earned major awards: The 1988 Texas Conservation Awards as a wildlife conservationist, the 2001 Safari Club International Lifetime Achievement Award, the 1986 Hemphill County Region I Outdoor man, the 1987 Armstrong County Wildlife Conservation Award, and a Texas Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Appreciation Award.

Smith died months after his induction at age 74.
