Butare Rugenerwa - Amarillo High
Why Honored: Rugenerwa accomplished quite a feat during his first season running cross country. Rugenerwa, who had previously played soccer and ran track, won the first two meets he entered last fall. That was all just in preparation, as he went on to win the Class 5A State Championship, running in a time of 15 minutes and 8 seconds.
Quotable: "I didn't expect to go that far. I was just hoping to make state but I didn't think I'd win. My coach and teammates made me want to represent my school right. When I was in the last 800 in the state meet that's when I thought 'I could win this.'"
