CHARLIE JOHNSTON - INDUCTEE #128

Charlie Johnston averaged 18 points a game as an all-district guard his senior year at Paducah High School, from which he graduated in 1959. He was an all-conference college pitcher at Southeastern Oklahoma State. He said his handicap in golf is "not real good" but that he enjoys playing almost every day.

Charlie Johnston had a 35-year head coaching record of 315-93-8 at Childress High School. When he retired after the 2002 season, his victory total ranked third all-time in Texas.

Johnston’s Childress teams made 24 playoff appearances and won 43 postseason games, reaching the Class 3A state title game twice.

Johnston was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 1994 and served as the president of the organization in 1985.

Johnston was an all-district guard at Paducah High School before he was an all-conference college pitcher at Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant.

After graduating from college, Johnston was an assistant for three years at Alamogordo, New Mexico High School before taking the Childress job at age 26.

Johnston was honored several times by the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame as Football Coach of the Year.
