Once Harold Chesty Walker got to Phillips, he helped write Panhandle football history. Chesty Walker made Phillips into a football dynasty, winning 172 games in 18 seasons. Phillips went 37 games without a loss. His teams compiled a record of 172-23-8. In those wins were 13 district championships, six regional titles, and a record-setting state title in 1954.

The University of Washington offered Chesty Walker an assistant’s position following the 1956 season. Walker spent almost 10 seasons with the Huskies and helped recruit Dimmitt running back Junior Coffey to Washington. Both were inducted into the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame.

As he neared retirement, Walker became a scout in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and the fledgling New Orleans Saints.

Walker inspired twenty-four former Phillips players to go into coaching.

Walker died of a heart attack at age 63 in July of 1968.
