DALE BLAUT - INDUCTEE #158

hall of fame fast fact:

Dale Blaut was a 10th round draft pick with the Chicago Bulls. Blaut told the Amarillo Globe-News, "That's when they started the ABA, too. They drafted me in the 10th round. So I had a decision to make. Back then you didn't have a lawyer or agent to help."

Dale Blaut

Dale Blaut was offered a chance to play at West Texas State. He accepted, and his team qualified for the 1969 National Invitation Tournament in New York. Blaut scored 40 points in a March 14, 1970 game. That still ranks NO. 4 on WT’s all-time single game scoring list, and his 22.2 points-per-game average that season is fourth in ranking.

Blaut coached at Channing, Idalou, and Sunray before coaching at Amarillo High. He led the Lady Sandies to back-to-back state basketball championships in 1993 and 1994, compiling a 70-2 record. The ’94 team was ranked No. 4 nationally by USA Today.

Blaut is one of four coaches to guide an Amarillo team to a state boys or girls basketball state title; and he did it twice. He resigned from the basketball position in 1997, but continued coaching the AHS girls golf team.

A few years later, Tex Nolan hired him back for a second tenure as basketball coach.

After more wins, he retired in 2005.
