DEAN WEESE - BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR 1968

Dean Weese - Spearman

Why Honored: When Dean Weese hung up his whistle after the 1998-99 season, he had a spectacular 1,207-197 record – an astounding 85.97 winning percentage. Weese had 10 state championships and two national AAU titles over a 42-year career that included stints in Higgins, Spearman, Levelland, Wayland Baptist College, and the professional Dallas Diamonds.

Under Weese, the Queens became a leading team in the new Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), which paved the way for future NCAA powers. The Queens made the AIAW Final Four in 1978 at UCLA after going to the semifinals two years earlier. Weese coached six players in the current Top 20 of Wayland’s all-time leading scorer list, six AAU All-Americans, and five Kodak All-Americans.

Weese is honored in the National Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Texas High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
