GREG SHERWOOD - INDUCTEE #126

hall of fame fast fact:

Greg Sherwood took the athletic director's job at West Texas State University for three days before Lubbock ISD talked him into replacing Pete Ragus as athletic director in 1987. Lubbock Christian also considered him when it started football in the early 1980s but hired Don Carthel, who went on to coach at West Texas A&M.

Greg Sherwood coached the Plainview Bulldogs to an 11-2 record and the first playoff appearance in school history. PHS went to the playoffs in 1980, 1982, and 1984; the 1983 team tied for the district title.

His coaching career spanned over Spearman, Dalhart, Kermit, and Liberal, Kansas. His lifetime varsity coaching record was 174-64-2.

He was respected by his fellow educators, started a popular pep rally for the band, and was active in the bus ministry at his church. Sherwood took time to get to know his players, inquiring about their goals, their personal life, and their spiritual life.

Sherwood served for 13 years as athletic director for the Lubbock school district after leaving Plainview. Sherwood is a member of the Texas High School Hall of Fame and the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

Amarillo Globe-News named him one of the 100 Sports Legends of the Texas Panhandle in 2000.
