Why Honored: Merrell capped off his successful sophomore season in 2015-2016 with an appearance at the UIL State Track and Field meet. While there, he set records in the 1600-meter race (4:22.65) and 800-meter run (1:55.11). Merrell was also a part of silver-medal winning 1600-meter relay team, along with Zack Stumbo, Dax Allen, and Juan Villarreal.

In 2018, Merrell earned even more medals, bringing home the gold in the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and 4x400 meter relay, as well as a first place team finish.

Merrell beat the UIL 1A record in the 800 meter by nearly three seconds, running it in 1:51.71.

Quotable: "It's a blessing to receive this honor. I thank my family, my coaches, and God. Setting two records at state is a phenomenal achievement for me. Running individually is fun and tough, but running on a relay team with your friends makes you want to work harder for your team. The reward seems more meaningful when you succeed together."
