Jan Newland's coaching career began with a four-year stay at Eddyville High School in Iowa.

Jan Irby Newland led the Claude Mustangettes to state basketball titles in 1971 and 1972. In the six-on-six game, Newland averaged 26 points a game and was a two-time all-state performer.

Newland played her first college year at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. In the summer of 1973, she played for the United States in the World Festival in Lima, Peru. After that summer, she transferred to William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa to finish her standout college career. Newland was a member of the Kodak All-American team in 1975, the first year Kodak sponsored the long-running women’s all-star team.

She embarked on a coaching career, starting at Wheeler with 9 district titles. She transferred to and through Dimmit and Plains before becoming head girls basketball coach and girls athletic coordinator at Mesquite High School.

In 1986, Newland was named to the William Penn College Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1995, Newland was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
