Jimmy Williams not only exceeded in football during high school, but also boxing. Williams was a district and regional Golden Gloves boxing champion.

Jimmy Williams was a three-year offensive lineman for Phillips during the late 1940s. Williams was named all-state center and accepted a scholarship to play football at Texas Tech. He lettered in the 1950 season before he was drafted in the Navy during the Korean War.

He served in the Navy and played on the team that won the Naval national championship. Returning to Tech for the 1952 season, Williams shifted to left tackle. He was named All-Border Conference and All-Texas 11 by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was a standout on Tech’s 1954 Gator Bowl championship team and repeated as All-Border in his senior season. He participated in the Blue-Gray Game and the Senior Bowl.

In 1954, he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but could not play due to a knee injury.

Williams’ best advice was to never quit. Williams died in 2008 at age 77.
