JIM REID - INDUCTEE #129

hall of fame fast fact:

Jim Reid showed he could get the best out of athletes - and not just basketball players. In 1992, he coached McMullen County to the Class 1A state volleyball finals match.

Jim Reid

Jim Reid began playing basketball in the late 1940s and spent time at the Maverick Club. He went on to become the only coach in the state to win three consecutive state titles at two different schools and three state championships at four schools.

Reid was in Palo Duro’s first graduating class in 1956, in which the Dons won the Class 3A state basketball title in their first year of existence, the first school from AISD to do so. Reid started on the team, leading the Dons in rebounding; Palo Duro went 26-3 that season.

Reid earned a scholarship to West Texas State; he grew to 6-6 and started three years for the Buffs.

Soon after graduation and a stint in the Army, he embarked on his 27-year career as a basketball coach and educator.

Reid was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996.
