JOE BAIN - INDUCTEE #164

Joe Bain

A graduate of West Texas State, Bain spent the first 10 years of his coaching career alternating between his hometown of Stinnett and Memphis.

In the early 1970s, he coached at Crockett Junior High for three years before Amarillo High hired him. Three years later, in 1979, Bain took over the Amarillo High track program. Over the next 27 years, the Sandies became a track powerhouse. His teams won 15 district titles in 21 years, including stretches of nine in a row from 1986-1994 and five in a row from 2000-2004. His 1989 team won the Region I-5A title, the first by an Amarillo school in 27 years.

In his career, 25 Sandie individuals and three relay teams qualified to the UIL state meet, with nine earning medals in the state’s highest classification.

Fittingly, his last team in 2006 won the district title. Twelve of the 16 school records were set by athletes under Bain.
