Bonnie Munn reclines in the chair her husband once occupied. "I won't get rid of this chair. It was Johnny's, you know," she said. She loved it when her husband was in a 36-hole tournament. "Johnny would get up early, play 18 holes, and then he would come home. All he wanted before he played the next 18 holes was a steak and a glass of milk," she said. "Then he would rest as long as he could before finishing the match."

John Dee Munn earned the reputation of “Mr. Golf.”

Born in Goodnight, Munn moved to Amarillo where he excelled as a member of the Amarillo High School golf team. After graduating in 1933 he moved to Lubbock, winning the city title at the age of 18.

In 1934, Munn moved back to Amarillo and won consecutive city championships. As an amateur golfer between 1933 and 1934, he played 266 holes at 92 strokes under par in tournament play. men’s city golf championships and is the only man to win the Amarillo city tournament four consecutive years. During one stretch from 1942 to 1950, Munn didn’t lose a match in a tournament.

Munn was named one of the Top 100 Sports Legends of the Panhandle by the Amarillo Globe-News in 2000. Munn had six holes-in-one.

He retired in 1980 and died in 2005 at the age of 89.
