hall of fame fast fact:

Johnny Allen

Few coaches, if any, in the Texas Panhandle put their stamp on a school like Johnny Allen did at Carver. He was there for 19 years: when it opened and when it closed.

Allen, who was born in McGregor and grew up in Temple, served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and then began his coaching career in Amarillo.

Allen came to Carver when the all-black school opened in 1948. He was there when desegregation closed its doors in 1967. He guided the Dragons to a state championship in football and three state titles in a row in track. In his fourth year at Carver, Allen guided the Dragons to their only football state title. He pushed his athletes through a relentless work ethic and motivated them to be better than they thought they could be.

After the closing of Carver, Allen taught at Horace Mann Middle School and ended his teaching career at Amarillo High in 1985.

He died in January 2003.
