hall of fame fast fact:

The first issue of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine contained the pictures of just two black athletes in its high school section. Junior Coffey was one of them.

Junior Coffey

Junior Coffey played for Dimmit almost 10 years before the UIL was fully integrated.

Coffey was a two-time all-state athlete in football and basketball. At 6 feet and 195 pounds, he twice led the Bobcats to the state finals. As a senior in 1961, Coffey was the only unanimous selection to the Class 2A state tournament team.

Coffey went to Washington on scholarship under Chesty Walker. At Washington, Coffey earned All-Pac 8 honors three times. He gained 1,604 yards in his career, and at the time was No. 2 on UW’s rushing charts. His totals remained among the school’s top 10 career rushing totals for almost 40 years.

Coffey began his NFL career in 1965 with the Green Bay Packers; he helped Green Bay win an NFL championship in his only season there. The Atlanta Falcons selected Coffey in the expansion draft of 1966; Coffey led Atlanta in rushing in both the 1966 and 1967 seasons.

Coffey finished his NFL career with 2,037 rushing yards, 487 receiving yards, and 15 touchdowns.
