Kendra Murray - Dee Henry memorial award winner 2023

Kendra Murray - Tascosa High

Why Honored: Murray made history in 2023. Not only is she the first ever wheelchair competitor in AISD history, she is also the first to compete and medal at the UIL state track and field championships. Murray earned a bronze medal in the shot put competition with her top throw of 16-feet 1/4 inches.

A few days before her freshman year at Tascosa High School, Murray was involved in a disastrous car wreck that left her paralyzed from the waist down due to a severe spinal cord injury. Her life was understandably turned upside down and she now had to get used to being in a wheelchair.

Entering her senior year, Murray decided to make it "her year". She worked with Joe Chris Rodriguez, founder and director of One Chair at a Time, as well as Tascosa Girls Track Coach Sarah Stewart to earn her spot at the state meet, eventually bringing home a medal.
