Hudson was the first woman to receive a full scholarship to the University of Texas-Arlington, where she earned MVP and Woman of the Year honors.

Kim Hudson was a seventh-grader at Bonham Middle School in 1972 when the Title IX legislation was passed and volleyball became a girls sport.

Hudson became a middle blocker for the Lady Sandies team that reached the state tournament in 1975. She later attended UT-Arlington, where she was the school’s athlete of the year in 1980.

Hudson returned to Amarillo High as the school’s volleyball coach. She guided the Sandies to a 35-2 record and the state finals in 1986. She later moved to West Texas State University where her teams won 127 of 152 matches from 1987-1990. Her teams had two Lone Star Conference championships. In 1990, the Lady Buffs had a school best 38-1 and won the school’s first NCAA Division II championship. Hudson spent stints at Northern Arizona University and the University of South Carolina, turning around their programs and records.

Hudson was named the American
Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year. Hudson’s 17 collegiate teams at three schools posted a 396-177 record.
