Did you know that coaching sometimes runs in the family? Larry Dippel's son, Jason Dippel, coaches football at Cypress Fairbanks High School in the Houston area.

Larry Dippel played on two state championship teams at Stamford. Aside from football, he also participated in track and basketball.

His high school experience and encouragement from coaches guided him toward his coaching career. Dippel coached at Amarillo High, Hereford, Stamford, Victoria, Carroll, and Corpus Christi. He spent 31 years as the Sandies’ mentor, the longest tenure for a head coach in Amarillo, regardless of the sport. He sent 26 AHS teams to the playoffs, including the 1992 team that reached the class 5A semifinals.

His AHS teams won 14 district titles. His head coaching record was 253-134-6. Dippel gained statewide and national recognition; he served as the president of the Texas High School Coaches Association. He was chosen as the first Tom Landry Award winner in 1993 from the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and received the Power of Influence Award from the American Football Coaches Association in 2003.

In 2005, Dippel stepped down as Amarillo High’s coach.
