Leona Gerber Wilhelm, the multi-sport athlete who won 10 UIL medals, was best known as a basketball standout at Nazareth and WT.

Gerber led the Nazareth Swiftettes to three class 1A state championships. Gerber was the Texas High School Basketball Coaches Association girls basketball player of the year in 1985. She was the AGN high school girls player of the decade in the 1980s.

Gerber chose to play close to home, earning all-region honors at South Plains. She played her last two collegiate years at WT, starting both years for Bob Schneider and averaging 11.2 points, 4.1 assists, and 4.2 steals per game.

She was inducted into WT’s Hall of Champions in 2008 and still holds a record at WT; she set WT’s free-throw shooting percentage record with more than 100 attempts in a season at 87.6 percent.
