Mark Hatley

Football took Mark Hatley from Phillips to Oklahoma State and from college and NFL coaching to executive positions.

Many considered Hatley the top player in Phillips school history. He was a linebacker and fullback, tough and durable, and a two-time Class 2A all-state player.

He went on to play linebacker at Oklahoma State; he started for two seasons. As a senior in 1971, he led the cowboys with five interceptions and 121 tackles.

Hatley coached at Tulsa, TCU, and Baylor before his break in the NFL, first as a scout and then defensive assistant with New Orleans Saints in 1984.

In 1987, Hatley left to coach linebackers with Kansas City. For the next 10 years, he was a scout and director of player personnel. The Chicago Bears offered him the job of vice president of player personnel in 1997; he was in charge of the draft for the next four years.

In 2004, just before training camp, Hatley died of a heart attack at 54.
