During the Depression, Martha Sutton moved from Tulia to Happy to live with her aunt. Her father did not see the importance of continuing her education post-eighth grade. Sutton disagreed; she worked for her room and board while attending school in Happy.

Sutton played basketball at Happy, which earned her national recognition. In 28 games her junior year, she scored 617 of Happy’s 942 points. She had a deadly accurate outside shot and superior quickness; she averaged 22 points a game when basketball was played with three girls on each half of the court.

Result of an 11-game stretch with 280 points, Sutton received national recognition in Robert Ripley’s “Believe It or Not.”

After high school, she attended Tulsa Business College where she started for the Stenos in AAU competition.

Martha Sutton Pool died at age 69 in 1986.
