After his one season at Groom, Ron Mills found a new suit of clothes in his car as an appreciation for the unbeaten season.

Ron Mills went to WT in the 1950s for football, baseball, and track. He focused on football after his freshman year and his playing status took off.

After an injury, Mills was moved from quarterback to running back and safety. He helped lead the Buffs to a 15-5 record his last two years. In the 1957 Tangerine Bowl, Mills was named the game’s MVP.

Mills went on to be an assistant coach in his hometown of White Deer until the head coaching position opened up in Groom. In his first year, he guided Groom to an 11-0-1 record and a class B regional championship.

After one season at Groom, Mills had stints at Panhandle and Canyon. Panhandle never had a losing season in his five years. In four years at Canyon, Mills’ teams won district twice.

After coaching in the Texas Panhandle for 14 years, Mills left to coach at Bay City, San Marcos, and Brenham.

He retired with an overall record of 203-115-14.
