RON SHANKLIN - INDUCTEE #77

Ronnie Shanklin was a career 20-points-a-game scorer in basketball at Carver High School.

Ron Shanklin, of Carver High School in Amarillo, went to North Texas State on a track scholarship.

Shanklin’s best quarter-mile time was 47.9 seconds; but once in Denton, he began playing football. Shanklin had 27 catches for 553 yards and four touchdowns during a five-game freshman season in 1966. In three years with the varsity, Shanklin caught 104 passes for 2,465 yards and 31 touchdowns. Shanklin set a school record with three touchdowns against Tulsa in 1967 en route to a 13-touchdown season, also a school record. Shanklin earned all-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 1967 and 1969.

Shanklin was a starter for the Steelers in Super Bowl IX, a 16-6 victory over Minnesota. In five seasons with the Steelers, he caught 166 passes for 3,042 yards and 24 touchdowns.

He returned to Denton in 1982 as a receivers coach at NTSU until 1991.

Ronnie Shanklin died in 2003 of colon cancer at age 54.
