Sarah Butler Carthel began her volleyball career by playing for Kids Inc. when she was 10 years old.

Sarah Butler Carthel starred in volleyball at Amarillo High and West Texas A&M University.

She twice earned all-state honors as a middle blocker at Amarillo High, sparking the Lady Sandies to a state championship (1994). Butler Carthel accepted a scholarship to the University of Texas, where she was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year, before she transferred to WT. WT went 98-12 in Butler Carthel’s three years on the team; the Lady Buffs won an NCAA Division II national championship in 1997. Her senior season, WT reached the Elite Eight semifinals. In her final college match, she recorded 41 kills. Butler Carthel was selected for the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American teams all three years. She was Division II Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999.

Later she was named to WT’s Hall of Champions (2007) and the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor (2008).

She played professionally for five years before becoming an assistant coach at Abilene Christian, WT, and Texas A&M Commerce.
