STEVE GERGENI - INDUCTEE #134

hall of fame fast fact:

Steve Gergeni was considered one of the top officials in the Texas Panhandle. He's only the third official inducted into the PSHOF. The first two were inductee No. 96 Bobby Scott in 1994 and No. 127 James Kyle in 2003.

Steve Gergeni

Steve Gergeni began his officiating career as a junior in college, in 1939, at a YMCA league basketball game. He continued for 43 years. He officiated for the Southwest, Missouri Valley, and Western Athletic Conferences, in addition to the Harlem Globe Trotters.

Gergeni’s name was consistently at or near the top of conference rankings of officials. There was never any doubt of the nature of his calls. Gergeni was loud and clear. He was known for being animated, vocal, and a hustler; he even had special gestures for fouls. From November to March, Gergeni would referee six games a week.

His 43 years included 11 bowl games and two NCAA Final Fours.

During the days, Gergeni worked 36 years in public schools; he was the director of health, education, and safety for AISD until he retired in 1983.
