tess maxfield - tennis athlete of the year 2014

Tess Maxfield - Claude

Why Honored: In 2013, as a sophomore, Maxfield and her sister, Jill, qualified for the state tennis tournament in doubles. In doing so, they became the first female state tennis qualifiers in Claude school history.

In 2014, as a junior, Maxfield made school history again by becoming the first singles state tennis qualifier and medalist, winning a bronze medal. Maxfield did not lose a match last spring, until the state semifinals, where she lost to two-time state champion Jessy Martinez of Junction.

Claude head coach Brett Maxfield, who is Tess' father, was also honored with the same award when he played tennis for Booker in 1981.

Quotable: "It's really exciting because it was unexpected. I never imagines getting this. I think it's great because my dad also won this award when he was in high school. I started high school playing doubles with my sister, and that was a great experience. But switching to singles has been hard, but I feel I've surprised myself by handling the adjustment and having so much success."
