Tod Mayfield attended Texas Tech University School of Law when he began his career in the law profession. He graduated as a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1993.

Tod Mayfield was a second-team all-stater in his junior and senior years at Panhandle High School. He then represented the third generation of Mayfields to play quarterback at WT.

Mayfield broke passing records at WT; he passed for a school record of 565 yards in a game against New Mexico State in 1985. After a second-place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference in 1985, Mayfield guided the Buffs to the Lone Star Conference championship in 1986. That season, he passed for 3,664 yards and 31 touchdowns. Mayfield stands sixth on WT’s all-time passing list with 7,424 yards; he completed 630 of 1,036 passes with 38 interceptions and 55 touchdowns. Mayfield once held 21 WT passing records. He earned Associated Press Little All-American third-team honors in 1986.

After graduation, Mayfield went into coaching in West, Texas, then at WT as the quarterbacks coach from 1988-1990.

Mayfield left coaching to enter the law profession.
