In the Texas High School Coaches All-Star football game in Fort Worth in 1987, William Thomas took over at quarterback and won the game's MVP award.

William Thomas was a Palo Duro all-stater who attended Texas A&M as quarterback and safety until his coach switched him to linebacker. As an Aggie linebacker, Thomas was a two-time All-Southwest Conference performer. In his senior year in 1990, Thomas made virtually every all-conference team and had 96 tackles and 13 quarterback sacks.

Thomas was drafted in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL draft by Philadelphia, only the second player from Amarillo to be selected in the draft. He played nine years for the Eagles, until he was released after the 1999 season. He played 145 games for the Eagles and was named to the Pro Bowl twice. In his last season, he had 116 tackles in 14 games.

Thomas signed with Oakland in July 2000 and played two seasons with the Raiders.

He retired after the 2001 season.
