how did Kids, incorporated become what it is today? - January 21, 2021

Kids, Incorporated has been a part of the Amarillo community for a very long time…75 years to be exact! We celebrated this milestone anniversary in 2020 and while we did not get to have a celebration as large as we had hoped, we are still extremely proud of this accomplishment.

Have you ever heard the story of how Kids, Inc. came to be? Just picture it. Amarillo in the early 1940’s. The town had a population of almost 50,000 people, with many fathers away at work or serving their country overseas. Enter Cal Farley and CC “Bus” Dugger. These two gentlemen were concerned that many young kiddos did not have anywhere to go after school and were facing a lack of adult supervision. They decided to do something to help.

In January of 1945 Cal and Bus organized the first Kids, Incorporated sports program at the Maverick Boys Club. 11 young boys took part in that first program. That first year was a success, with Kids, Inc. officially becoming a non-profit organization. In 1946, the program expanded to include sports for young girls with the addition of a softball program. The organization continued to grow and expand year after year. Now, we offer over 20 seasons each year for both youth players and adults!

A lot has changed since these early days, but our mission and goal has stayed the same. We strive to offer sports programs to every child who wants to participate and aim to instill important life lessons about competition, sportsmanship, and getting along with others. It has been a fun and rewarding 75 years and we are excited for you to be a part of our future! Thanks for following along with this week’s edition of Catching Up With Kids, Incorporated. We will see you back here next week!
