Aaron Gomez - Canyon
Why Honored: In his first year as the boys golf coach at Canyon High, Gomez saw his team finish second at the state tournament for the second year in a row. The Eagles were no lower than third in any spring tournament they playing in during 2005. They won the District 1-3A title, plus tournaments at Sunray and Dalhart.
At the regional tournament, the Eagles trailed Graham by eight shots after day one. Phemister shot a final round 65 to lead the team to a two-shot win. At the state tournament they were withint two shots of the lead after day one, but struggled in round two and wound up in third place.
Quotable: "Early in the spring we shot a lot of rounds in the 320 to 330 range. I knew we had an experienced team and I kept telling them they had plenty of room to improve and that is exactly what they did. At state we had an opportunity to win but just didn't get it done. I was very proud of how they played and of their overall success."
