Did you know that when Stinnett's Donny Anderson signed with the Green Bay Packers in 1965, his $711,000 contract was the largest in NFL history. Anderson was one of the first players to be the subject of the bidding wars between the NFL and the AFL. The Packers beat out the Houston Oilers for his services, and Anderson played in Super Bowls I and II for Green Bay.

Donny Anderson of Stinnett was key in Tech’s transition into the storied Southwest Conference. After appearing on the cover of Texas Football magazine, Anderson and Tech football earned the respect of the state.

In a 1965 contest against Oklahoma State, Anderson had 91 yards receiving, 44 rushing, 37 returning punts, and 169 returning kickoffs for 341 total in a 17-14 Tech win. Until 2003, he held the Red Raider record for all-purpose yards with 5,156 in his three years.

Anderson played in three all-star games before signing a record pro contract with Green Bay. Anderson finished fourth in the Heisman voting, but he wasn’t denied All-American honors. He joined Jim Grabowski of Illinois as the Sporting News Co-National Player of the Year in 1965.

Anderson played halfback on Vince Lombardi’s two Super Bowl champion teams and totaled six years with the Packers, where he also punted. He retired after three seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals.

His NFL career included 4,696 yards rushing, 209 pass receptions, and 55 touchdowns, including one in Super Bowl II.
