DR. FLOYD GOLDEN - INDUCTEE #44

hall of fame fast fact:

In the book 'The Golden Years', which he completed writing in 1974, Dr. Floyd Golden reported that he and longtime friend and former ENMU football coach Al Garten attended the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.

Dr. Floyd Golden

Floyd Dewey Golden of Snyder attended WT after a two-year stint in the U.S. Army. At WT, Golden lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis, earning 13 letters in all. One fall, Golden enrolled in 18 hours of classes, taught two classes as a graduate assistant, played tackle on the football team, and made the dean’s honor roll.

Golden became principal (1921) and started a football program (1923) at Friona High, then helped build a university in Portales, N.M., now known as Eastern New Mexico University.

After his retirement in 1961, Golden wrote a book, The Golden Years, detailing ENMU’s history and trumpeting its successes. Sports, he believed, helped bring university students together.

After retiring from Eastern, Golden moved to Amarillo where he became a successful cattle raiser and devoted countless hours to community service.

In 1971, WT named Floyd Dewey Golden its Most Distinguished Graduate; he has received multiple other honors.
