GERALD MYERS - INDUCTEE #92

hall of fame fast fact:

Gerald Myers's close friendship with Bob Knight was key in luring the Hall of Fame basketball coach to Tech to take over the Red Raiders in 2001.

Gerald Myers

Borger graduate signed with Texas Tech and became the Red Raiders’ first All-SWC athlete in any sport. Gerald Myers was named all-conference guard in 1958; his free-throw shooting mark of 86.9 percent remains a school record.

After college, Myers went to nearby Lubbock Monterey to begin a coaching career. He coached the Plainsmen to an 83-26 record over seven years before jumping to the college ranks at Houston Baptist in 1967.

Three years later, he accepted a position as assistant coach under Bob Bass at Tech. Myers served as interim coach before becoming head coach of the Red Raiders for 20 years.

At Tech, his teams won 326 games, most of any men’s coach. His 181 wins in the old SWC were the second-most among conference coaches. In all, his teams won two SWC titles, won the SWC post-season tournament three times, made four NCAA tournament appearances, and had one trip to the Sweet 16.

Myers later became athletic director.
