JOE HAYES - INDUCTEE #99

Did you know there are four generations of Joe Hayes? Hayes had a stepson, Aubrey "Judge" Perry of Mesquite, Texas, and a son, Joe W. Hayes Jr., a prominent Amarillo lawyer. Joe Jr. has a son, Joe Hayes III. And Joe Hayes III has a son, Joe Hayes IV.

The 5’10”, 160-pound all-around athlete played WT football and basketball. Joe Hayes was best known for his basketball career; his last two seasons, the Buffs won 46 of 60 games.

At the outbreak of World War II, Hayes enlisted in the Navy. He was a member of the Norfolk Naval team that was among the nation’s best.

After the war, Hayes began his coaching career at Phillips as the head basketball coach and football line coach under Chesty Walker. The Blackhawks became a football power, winning four Class B regional titles.

He was the head basketball coach for 10 years; seven of his teams reached the regionals and three times the regional finals.

Hayes decided to go into administration in 1955. After 39 years of service with Phillips school system, Hayes retired in 1984.
