LARRY SANDERS - INDUCTEE #72

hall of fame fast fact:

Not only were the "Touchdown Twins," Ben Collins and Larry Sanders, reunited as they became PSHOF members Nos. 71 and 72 in 1987, but they also had another honor coming. Later that year, they were inducted into WT's first Hall of Champions class.

Larry Sanders

Larry Sanders, the 190-pound backfield mate, was one of WT’s “Touchdown Twins” with Ben Collins. Sanders was a strong blocker who started for Coach Al Baggett’s 1939 WT team that went 4-3-1.

During World War II, Sanders served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

After the war, he returned to WT to get his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Sanders worked as a coach and teacher at McLean, Canadian, Electra, and Amarillo from 1953 to 1967.

He moved to Canadian to become principal of Canadian High School, which was home for him. Sanders served as the Canadian High School principal for 15 years. He then became curriculum director for the Canadian Independent School District for two more years until he retired in 1984.

Sanders and Collins, known as a good team, were inducted into WT’s first Hall of Champions class in 1987.

Sanders died in 1997 at age 77.
