Pete Shotwell grew up in Canyon and was an all-around athlete at West Texas State where he played football and baseball, and graduated in 1916.

Shotwell later became one of Texas’ top football coaches during a 37-year career that contained no losing seasons.

After 18 months of military service, Shotwell coached at Abilene High School where his Eagles won four district titles in five years with a 40-3 record; the Eagles reached semifinals in 1920-23. The ’23 Eagles allowed one touchdown all season.

He later won state titles at Breckenridge (1929) and at Longview (1937), making him the only coach to win state titles at three schools. His high school coaching record was 262- 90-18. He coached at Simmons University (now Hardin Simmons), at Sul Ross College (now Sul Ross State), and served 10 years as athletic director at McMurry College.

Shotwell was one of the originators of the annual high school football all-star game.
