Over a span of 29 years, track stars, basketball, golf, and tennis players found themselves honing their skills under Carter’s tutelage.

From 1946 to 1965, Carter had only four losing seasons. He amassed a 289-175 record in basketball. He took his teams to five regional meets. In his 15 years as AC baseball coach, Carter never experienced a losing season. His track teams won a state championship. In golf, his teams captured three consecutive state championships from 1949 to 1951.

While at AC, Carter helped found the National Junior College Athletic Association. He was regional director of the NJCAA for 19 years.

In 1965, he moved to Angelo State to head the physical
education department there.
